Consideration Practice

Every type of education and research exists on the topics of values and ethics. Ironically, it is all too frequent that one experiences ill behaviors in situations where it is not necessary. Unfortunately, it is too easy to find relationships, groups and organizations with these toxic mannerisms. Rather than extensive workshops about values and ethics, a gentle practice of consideration could actually result in a widely appreciated difference.

Consideration softens the brittle edges, tears down rigid defenses, brings factions closer, and most important — makes every-day life palatable. Over and beyond that, even the most offensive person can appreciate a little harmony.

Our culture demonstrates that we collectively value selfishness and greed. This is evidenced in our mainstream media. The only news one receives is from the media, and so one depends upon the perception of reporters for ideas. This toxic hustle and bustle of life leaves one very little time to think about bettering life for ourselves or others. The condition of the nations today, in spite of all the progress, share an ill-feeling between them. Friendship often exists for self-interest.

I think it is safe to say that every person longs for a sense of peaceful coexistence. This does not equate to insipid kindness, nor disingenuous exchanges. Simplicity of behavior can move mountains. Simple consideration means practice of careful thought in every-day life. We seek knowledge yet, the very smallest positive gesture towards others’ well-being has greater benefits. Imagine the impact if all the coaches, consultants and advisors shared a few lessons on how to practice consideration in relationships. If needed, the topic can be researched to inform those who need the more data about the ethic of moral behavior. In some cases, our lifestyle has squeezed the nutritrion out of well-meaning teachers, parents, and managers. Our mechanized minds likely need processes and techniques to learn how to be considerate. While this might sanitize the topic, it could be used for those who truly are less acquainted with the value of civil society.

All that is really needed is to better understand our life. We can set apart a certain time to think about our own life and doings. This reflective inquiry can make every-day life a greater possibility. We have opportunities from the moment we wake till we slumber.

Imagine relationships based mutual advantage. Groups and organizations that seek to enhance systems rather than their gain or budget. Certainly this practice would come as a surprise to many. To others it might be misperceived as a paradoxical, selfish tactic. Communication adjustments would allow the considerate person to favorably and effectively communicate their intentions. Of course the entire population would need an adjustment period. This wave could impact all ages, relationships, contexts (groups, organizations, perhaps even our economy.) In fact, a consideration revolution would no doubt advance human existence and culture. It might even make us happier.

Rather than read this as another great idea, we can reflect upon how considerate are our behaviors today.

  • How do we practice consideration in our every-day life?
  • Isn’t the lesson of the lesson of how to live equally important to any know-how?
  • What are our personal and professional intentions?
  • Do these include consideration of others?
  • When was the last time we were considerate without a hope for a response or gain?
  • Have we done an honest deed today?

where mindfulness begins, consideration extends

To try and find out in what way happiness can be brought about, and in this way to realize that peace which is the longing of every soul;  and to impart it to others, thereby attaining our life’s goal, the sublimity of life.
